A Better Enrichment Routine for Indoor Birds

Enrichment is most useful when it encourages a bird to do something: search, climb, manipulate, shred, solve, or communicate.

Rotate rather than overwhelm

A cage filled with too many objects can reduce usable space. Offer a smaller selection and rotate items after observing which activities the bird uses safely.

Make food more interesting

Simple foraging can begin by placing part of the normal diet in folded paper, a clean cardboard cup, or another bird-safe holder. Start easy so the bird learns how the activity works.

Include movement and social time

Perches of appropriate size and material, supervised out-of-cage activity, and calm interaction can all be part of the routine. Inspect toys often for loose threads, sharp pieces, and entanglement hazards.
